III is, appropriately enough, Devils Wielding Scimitars third album. It's been seven years since their last album, though. They released the LP Curious Soul on their own Scared Guy label in 1989. They followed that with an LP/CD/CS, Worry Dolls on San Jacinto in 1990.
I can remember spinning tracks from Curious Soul at WMEB when that album came out. What I remember of that album is that it had a rather enchanting, laid-back sound. III retains that vibe. Suzy Callahan manages to sound immediately familiar without creating a sense of deja vu. Her vocals, alternately, ride along with and propel the music. If DWS were jazzier they might sound like Kelly Hogan/The Jody Grind. There's a solid psychedelic aspect to their sound that, if they went a little further into it, would bear comparison to Tiny Lights, though Callahan's voice is very different from TL's Donna Croughn. If the music leaned more towards the blues, Callahan might recall Joan Osborne. None of these comparisons will allow for an accurate description of Suzy Callahan and Devils Wielding Scimitars, though. You'll just have to hear them for yourself.
