Defining Characteristics Associated With a Filetype

Summary of Information to Specify | Information in Detail

You can add, change, or delete content filetype definitions from a web browser using the configuration forms or from a VM userid that has SYSADMIN authorization using the CONFIG FILETYPE command.

Use the Select Filetypes to Manage From a List configuration form if you know the content filetype definition that you want to view, change, or delete. VM:Webgateway displays an alphabetical list of all configured content filetypes. Use this list to select the content filetypes you want to manage.

Use the Search for Filetypes to Manage by Characteristics configuration form if you want to view, change, or delete content filetype definitions that have similar characteristics. VM:Webgateway displays a form that lists characteristics associated with content filetypes. Use the form to identify the characteristics of the content filetypes you want to manage.

You can use either form to add content filetype definitions.

Each content filetype you use must exist in the VM:Webgateway database. The default database shipped with VM:Webgateway contains several content filetypes, including filetypes that are designated as system filetypes. You can change or delete any filetypes except system filetypes, and you can add new filetypes.

Summary of Information to Specify

For static files:

  1. Content type
  2. Character set translation
  3. BFS line end
  4. Whether to parse the file for server side include commands
  5. Filter to reformat the file

For CGI programs:

  1. Environment
  2. Authorization header

Information in Detail

For static files:

  1. Content type

Specify a file's HTTP content type, which is the combination of the file's contents and its format (for example, text/html or image/gif.

  2. Character set translation

You can specify whether VM:Webgateway should translate a file's data before delivering it to the web browser and, if so, which translation table to use.

  3. BFS line end

You can specify the type of line end character VM:Webgateway is to use for a file that is stored in BFS: CRLF, NEWLINE, or NONE. If you specify CRLF or NONE, VM:Webgateway can compute the size of the BFS file so a web browser can display the status of bytes received and bytes left to receive. If the TRANSLATE characteristic is NONE, then the BFS line end characteristic must also be NONE.

  4. Whether to parse for server side include commands

  5. Filter to reformat the file

You can specify the filter that VM:Webgateway should use to reformat the file before delivering it to the web browser.

For CGI programs:

  1. Environment

You can specify the environment in which VM:Webgateway should run the CGI progam:

    • As an EXEC on the VM:Webgateway SVM
    • As an EXEC on a worker
    • In Webshare compatibility mode on the VM:Webgateway SVM
    • In Webshare compatibility mode on a worker

  2. Authorization header

You can specify whether VM:Webgateway should pass the HTTP Authorization request header to the CGI program.
