Accounting for Serving Files

VM:Webgateway can collect data about the files it serves and send the data to an accounting package, enabling you to document and charge for VM:Webgateway usage.

VM:Webgateway accounts for serving files by producing an accounting record for every transaction (or file it serves), and storing the accounting records in punch files. You determine when VM:Webgateway sends the punch files to your accounting package, based on your site's needs.

VM:Webgateway accounting includes the following data for each file it serves:

  • Identification of the data owner
  • Identification of the user accessing the data
  • IP address and TCP port of the client and the web server
  • Basic resource consumption (CPU and I/O) for the web server and workers
  • Number of bytes VM:Webgateway writes to an HTTP client
  • Number of transactions (or files served) in the punch file

For more information on the data VM:Webgateway collects, see a detailed description of the accounting record.

If your accounting package requires a data format that differs from that on the accounting records, you can use an accounting post-processor to modify the records.

For detailed information on setting up accounting, see Setting up VM:Webgateway Accounting.
