Publishing Files Created Using a Web Authoring Tool

Summary of Steps

1. Decide the location on VM (either an SFS or BFS directory) where you want to store the files you will publish from a PC web authoring tool.
2. If your user page is not defined as the location to which you want to publish files, redefine the location.
3. Use the PC web authoring tool to create one or more web pages.

Steps in Detail

1. Decide the location on VM (either an SFS or BFS directory) where you want to store the files you will publish from a PC web authoring tool.

   Use the following information to help you decide where you want to publish files to:

   SFS directory

   • The names of the files in the PC web authoring tool must be valid CMS filename and filetypes, so the files are named correctly when published to the SFS directory.
   • If you publish data using Microsoft FrontPage, pages that you create with the FrontPage Wizard or that use FrontPage Themes do not display correctly when published to an SFS directory.
   • After the files are stored on VM, the URLs a web browser user needs to use to view the files are case insensitive.

   BFS directory

   • You do not need to be concerned with how to name the files because the BFS file system supports the same file conventions as PC web authoring tools.
   • If you publish data using Microsoft FrontPage, pages that you create with the FrontPage Wizard or that use FrontPage Themes will display correctly when published to a BFS directory.
   • After the files are stored on VM, the URLs a web browser user needs to use to view the files are case sensitive.

2. If your user page is not defined as the location to which you want to publish files, redefine the location.

   To determine if you can serve files from user pages, enter the QUERY USERPAGES command from your VM userid. If VM:Webgateway is set up to allow you to serve files from user pages, enter the QUERY USERROOT command from your VM userid to determine the current location of your user page.

   If you need to redefine the location of your user page, enter the SET USERROOT command from your VM userid to redefine its location.

   The SFS or BFS directory you define as your user page location must exist before you can publish files to it. The publishing process will create any required subdirectories.

3. Use the PC web authoring tool to create one or more web pages.

4. Use the publish feature of the PC web authoring tool to move the files from the PC to the user page location on VM.
