This is easily the most adventurous and ambitious issue I've put together to date. It contains a little bit of everything and many more reviews than usual. I am hoping that I can continue in this vein and perhaps even put this together on a monthly basis. There are a couple of new features in this issue. Bill Bumgarner has written an informative piece on CD singles and will probably be contributing similar pieces in the future. If there is enough interest in what Bill is writing about, he would be happy to consider creating a separate mailing list for discussion of CD singles. If you have any comments concerning CD singles, you can send them to both myself (MURPH@MAINE.BITNET) and Bill (wb1j+@andrew.cmu.edu). Another new feature is a section that I have devoted to the independent/underground cassette culture. Several months ago I read an informative article written by Bill Hsu and began to write to the places he listed addresses for in his article. There is certainly some interesting music out in the 'underground'. A lot of it on the eclectic side and it is not for everyone. If you're an adventurous sort, you'll find that there's a whole new world of music that can open up for you if you give it just a little chance. I have one final request and then I'll let you get on to the reviews. Should you wish to order an album from any of the smaller labels found within Network Audio Bits, please include with your order request a small note letting the company know that you learned of their product through reading Network Audio Bits. I have been in contact with several record companies in order to provide a variety of music for these 'pages', and I know these record companies will take the magazine and its readership much more seriously once they have an indication that word of their product is being spread and being heard. Thanks! ======================================================================== Yardbird Suite Frank Morgan Quartet Yardbird Suite Producer: Orrin Keepnews T Night in Tunisia Engineer: Danny Kopelson R Billie's Bounce Contemporary CCD-14045-2 A Star Eyes Released: 1988 C Scrapple From the Apple Total Disc Time: 49:28 K Skylark Source - CD S Cheryl Performance: 10 Sound Quality: 10 A few months and a couple of issues have gone by. Yes, there's also another Frank Morgan album out, too. Yes, there's also a review of it in this issue. So, what else is new, you ask? Well, since this album is a tribute to Charlie Parker, the tunes are not new. What is new is Frank Morgan's interpretation of these tunes. Charlie Parker's influence on jazz has been well documented (that's certainly a major understatement). If anyone reading this review is just discovering the world of jazz, a little research on Bird at your local library is not a bad place to start. It is certain that there can never be another Bird. It is equally certain that there will never be another Frank Morgan. You can take out your Parker records (or perhaps CDs) and compare Morgan's readings of these songs with Parker's. This would be almost pointless, except as an exercise in comparing styles that are, obviously, similar. You'll also be able to hear the difference in recording techniques and technology, as _Yardbird Suite_ is a direct-to- digital recordings and Parker's records all date before his death in 1955. There is one tune here that you won't find if you go looking for it in your Charlie Parker collection. The tune is 'Skylark'. Morgan, who as a young musician hung out with Bird, recalls clearly of Bird's telling him it was a tune he 'wanted' to cut. This adds a personal touch to Morgan's tribute. Morgan is joined by Mulgrew Miller on piano, Ron Carter on bass and Al Foster on drums. If you haven't checked out any of Frank Morgan's other albums, _Yardbird Suite_ is as good a place as any to start. The tunes are all classic Parker tunes (except 'Skylark') and are being performed by an all-star band fronted by the best alto saxophonist currently in the idiom. By the way, the CD has an extra track, 'Cheryl', which clocks in as an extra 8 minutes of music not available on LP or cassette. ======================================================================== The Complete Riverside Recordings Thelonious Monk Producer: Orrin Keepnews Engineers: Rudy Van Gelder, Jack Higgins, Ray Fowler and Reice Hamel Tape reprocessing and rerecording by Danny Kopelson Riverside RCD-022-2 Released: 1988 (The 22 LP set was released in 1986) Total Time: 936:25 (15 discs) Source - CD Like Charlie Parker (mentioned in previous review), Thelonious Monk has had a major impact on the world of jazz. This 15 disc set covering his years with Riverside is not only special because it provides the jazz enthusiast with a retrospective covering those years. It also presents one with an assortment of session outtakes, accidents, failures and other previously unissued takes along with all the material available from LPs issued during that time. With this musical history is a 25 page booklet containing a wealth of information concerning Monk's discography, dates and descriptions of the sessions, photographs and extensive liner notes and historical insights by Orrin Keepnews. For any sort of retrospective project, the original producer is an extremely valuable commodity. Fortunately for jazz fans Orrin Keepnews is still producing jazz artists and was willing to put forth the colossal amount of time, effort and love required for this project. Just playing each of these discs through once will take over 15 hours. One can only imagine the amount of time Keepnews spent sorting through and listening to tapes, many of which contained very little written information about what the tape contained. In the introduction of the CD booklet Keepnews writes that "The compilation of this collection of recordings has been one of the proudest achievements of my many years as a jazz producer. Thelonious Monk was one of the most significant artists in the entire history of our music." Keepnews has every reason to be proud and deserves the undying appreciation of every Thelonious Monk fan, every jazz fan and future fans for putting together this historical monument. Keepnews work on this project has also been recognized by the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences (NARAS), who vote on each year's "Grammy" awards. _The Complete Riverside Recordings_ was honored as the Best Historical Album (an award which goes to the producer) and the accompanying booklet was honored for Best Album Notes. Keepnews' liner notes are invaluable to anyone at all interested in jazz and its history. His association with Monk and other artists provide everyday jazz fans like myself with keen insight into the lives of these artists. He also has given descriptions of each session, some vague and some very detailed, depending on a combination of his own recollections and whatever written documentation he could locate. He has made a few corrections concerning dates and sessions based on his extensive work during this compilation. It is unfortunate that many master tapes have been lost or destroyed over the years. Riverside went out of business in 1964 and their catalog has had 3 owners since then, with the tapes moving from New York to California. So, it is remarkable that this material has survived and survived so well. It is a testament to Keepnews ability as a producer that these recordings sound so consistently good after all these years. Though a lot of material has been lost over time, a few unreleased nuggets were still intact and are included in this compilation. Among these are several cuts from a much talked-about April, 1960 session with Shelley Manne, an opening to 'Pannonica' from October, 1956 and several alternate takes and failures of 'Crepuscule With Nellie' from June, 1957. _The Complete Riverside Recordings_ is without a doubt one of the most impressive projects I have had the pleasure of hearing and reading. Thank you, Fantasy Inc. Thank you, Orrin Keepnews. Above all, thank you, Thelonious Monk. Rest in peace. ======================================================================== Kilimanjaro Morocco Rippingtons Northern Lights Producer: Russ Freeman T Dream of the Sirens Engineers: B.Gilderman & M. Russ Freeman's talents as a guitarist, producer and keyboardist are featured prominently and Brandon Fields adds some impressive saxophone work. All the songs were written by Freeman, except for the Huff, McFadden & Whitehead classic tune 'Backstabbers', and arranged with particular players in mind. Percussionist Steve Reid, bassist Jimmy Johnson and drummer Vinny Colaiuta round out most of the performers used on _Kilimanjaro_. I've enjoyed this CD since I received it a short while ago, but I can't help but feel like the guy who ordered a burger deluxe and didn't discover that there was no meat in his bun until his last bite. What more do I want? I don't know. Maybe I just want something not quite so lite, with a little more heft to it. ======================================================================== Sampler One - Narada Equinox Artists Various Artists Ballet - David Arkenstone w/ Andrew White Producers: Various T November Winds - Friedemann Engineers: Various R Canyon Lands - David Lanz & Paul Speer A Sourdos - Friedemann Narada CD-3004 C Eagle's Path - David Lanz & Paul Speer Released: 1988 K Rain Forest - David Lanz & Paul Speer Total Disc Time: 53:33 S Nantucket - David Arkenstone w/ Andrew White Source - CD The Eye of the Dragonfly - Friedemann Faces of the Forest Part II - Lanz & Speer Performance: 10 Indian Summer - Friedemann Sound Quality: 10 Desert Rain - David Lanz & Paul Speer Seven of the eleven tracks on this sampler appear on albums that have been reviewed in previous issues of Network Audio Bits and Audio Software Review. _Indian Summer_ by Friedemann was reviewed in issue #9 and _Desert Vision_ by David Lanz and Paul Speer was reviewed in issue #8. The music here is representative of what I like best in the new age genre of music. These pieces are a fusion of new age, jazz, pop, classical and rock that are soothing (like a lot of new age music), yet also challenge the listener (like a good jazz recording). There are currently three titles in the Narada Equinox catalog, not including this sampler. A fourth, _Islands_ (CD-3005) will probably be issued soon, as the two David Arkenstone and Andrew White pieces are taken from that album. ======================================================================== Narada Christmas Collection Joy to the World - Bruce Mitchell Various Artists Ukranian Carol - Spencer Brewer Producers: Various T What Child is This - Peter Buffett Engineers: Various R It Came Upon a Midnight Clear - A Tingstad & Rumbel Narada CD-3902 C The Man From Ceasaria - Friedemann Released: 1988 K O Holy Night - David Lanz & Paul Speer Total Disc Time: 42:30 S Patapan/Noel Nouvelet - Nancy Rumbel Source - CD Return of the Magi - William Ellwood God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman - John Doan Performance: 10 Away in a Manger - David Darling Sound Quality: 10 I Saw Three Ships - David Arkenstone Narada has recently released this CD of Christmas instrumentals, some acoustic and some electronic, by several artists on their roster. There are well known tunes and not so well known tunes represented here. In the accompanying booklet, each artist writes a few words about why he or she chose a particular tune. A couple of paragraphs of biographical information are also included on each artist. There isn't all that much that one can say when reviewing a Christmas recording. This one appears to be more concerned with the spirit of Christmas than some Christmas albums I've seen. This spirit is pervasive throughout the disc, with each different artist. The fact that these artists come under the 'New Age' label shouldn't bother anyone looking for good Christmas music as the holidays approach. These are all gifted musicians performing essentially traditional songs using state of the art recording technology. In all, this is easily one of the best Christmas recordings I've heard. ======================================================================== Have A Good Time Gee Baby, Ain't I Good to You Ruth Brown You Won't Let Me Go Producer: Ralph Jungheim T 5-10-15 Hours Engineer: John Eargle R Have a Good Time Fantasy F-9661 A Teardrops From My Eyes Released: 1988 C Always on My Mind Total Time: 47:35 K Yes Sir, That's My Baby Source - LP S When I Fall in Love (Mama) He Treats Your Daughter Mean Singer Ruth Brown has gotten a lot of exposure lately. An actress for the last 12 years, Brown can be seen in her first major film role, Motormouth Mabelle, in John Waters' _Hairspray_. She also performed at the Atlantic Records 40th Anniversary party, a company in which she played a large part in in putting on the map in the 1950s. She also hosts the weekly National Public Radio program _Harlem Hit Parade_ and has been nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. She's also set to star in the Broadway production of the musical _Black and Blue_. With all this going on, she's also found time to record and release a new album. _Have A Good Time_ is Ruth's first album in six years and is her debut for Fantasy. The album was recorded during an engagement in June at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel's Cinegrill by Ralph Jungheim, direct to two-track digital. Ruth and her band captivate the listener with intimate ballads ('Teardrops From My Eyes', 'Have a Good Time', 'Always on My Mind') and get one's blood moving with some rousing r&b numbers ('5-10-15 Hours', 'Yes Sir, That's My Baby', '(Mama) He Treats Your Daughter Mean'). '5-10-15 Hours', 'Teardrops From My Eyes' and '(Mama) He Treats Your Daughter Mean' are songs with which she had hits in the 1950s. Of note here, the title cut, is a song that she recorded for Atlantic in 1952 and stopped performing in 1953 on the day that her father died. She was booked into Norfolk, Virginia, near her home town of Portsmouth. Her father died 30 minutes before she arrived, but the promoters wouldn't allow her to cancel the show. She went on stage, sang a few numbers and broke down crying a short way into 'Have a Good Time'. Only recently has she begun performing it again. On this recording it is the most captivating number. That's saying something, as the whole album is dynamite! Ruth is supported by Bobby Forrester, Red Holloway, Charles "C.I." Williams, Bill Williams and Clarence "Tootsie" Bean. Forrester's organ and Holloway's tenor sax stand out as they accompany and solo. At the end of Lee Hildebrand's liner notes is a recent quote from New York Daily News critic David Hinckley: "Besides keeping Atlantic Records afloat, Brown was and is perhaps the single most important singer in the evolution of rhythm 'n' blues into rock 'n' roll. She not only then had the voice, she still has it now. She has the spirit. From Aretha Franklin to Whitney Houston, there is a direct line that goes back to Brown. She was and is still a brilliant artist." ======================================================================== Chicago Style Yank Rachell Depression Blues Producer: Robert G. Koester T Roll Me Over Baby Engineer: Mike Rasfeld R Check Up on My Baby Delmark DS-649 A Early in the Morning Released: 1988 C Diving Duck Total Time: 41:12 K Let Me Tangle in Your Vines Source - LP S I Don't Believe You Love Me No More Going to St. Louis It's 3:30am. Rain is pelting my living room window incessantly. I've just put Yank Rachell's _Chicago Style_ on the turntable. It's the kind of night where a good blues album creates the proper mood. _Chicago Style_ is more than a 'good' blues album. At first glance Yank Rachell may appear to be a novelty of sorts. In a sense, he probably is, as he is among the very few, if not the last, black blues mandolin players alive. At 78 he is still going strong. He is recognized as the patriarch of the Indianapolis blues scene and still performs wherever he can. He still plays acoustic blues occasionally, but more often can be found with his mandolin amplified and accompanied by an electric guitar. Yank began amplifying his mandolin in the 1950's and considers it necessary in order to be heard. He says, "You know, when you're playing before those crowds, and you ain't playin' electric, you just break too many strings." His music, though modernly presented, is true to it's roots. Roots that stretch back through the 1930's and 1940's which saw Yank recording in Memphis, St. Louis and Chicago. Being not-yet-30 and part of the white middle class, I know I cannot possibly relate to Yank's music the same way as someone who grew up in the 1930's, 40's and 50's, but I can still feel and hear the power and the emotion of his traditional songs and style. The band adds to this feeling, supporting Yank admirably. The band consists of Pete Crawford and well known blues sidemen Floyd Jones and Odie Payne. Worthy of note on _Chicago Style_ are the extensive liner notes by freelance writer George Fish, which cover almost the entire back of the album jacket and give a brief history of Rachell's life. ======================================================================== Last Days Of The Century Last Days of the Century Al Stewart Real and Unreal Producer: Joe Chiccarelli T King of Portugal Engineer: Csaba Petocz R Red Toupee Enigma D1-73316 A Where Are They Now Released: 1988 C Bad Reputation Total Time: 46:06 K Josephine Baker Source - LP S License to Steal Fields of France Antarctica Ghostly Horses of the Plain Al Stewart's music has always evoked a sense of the fantastic within me. His past songs have dealt with subjects that have had an Alice in Wonderland or Mary Poppins feel ('Year of the Cat'), have put a historical period or figure into a musical setting ('Flying Sorcery' describes man's attempts at flight and flying's pioneers), and like a good science fiction or fantasy writer, Al's words take the listener to other places, other times, and occasionally other worlds. Al continues with similar themes here, with 'Last Days of the Century' venturing into the future, 'Real and Unreal' creating a sense of the fantastic and 'King of Portugal' and 'Josephine Baker' take us to other lands and times in history. The one thing that has always made the difference between a good or bad Al Stewart album is the songwriting. Al's lyrics have always been intelligently crafted and have presented the listener with a maximum of information without getting verbose. Like a good or great poet's work, Al's lyrics waste no words and create many images. His music has always served the song, as well. _Last Days of the Century_ is easily Al's best work since 1978's _Time Passages_. Both _24 Carrots_ and _Russians and Americans_ had their moments, but _Last Days of the Century_ is consistent from the opening title cut to the instrumental closer 'Ghostly Horses of the Plain'. ======================================================================== For Rent Walk a Circle The Magnolias Glory Hop Producers: Monty Lee Wilkes, Tom Goodbye For Now Herbers & the Magnolias T Down & Out Engineer: Tom Herbers R Gangs in My Town Twin/Tone TTR 88129 A Halfway Down the Road Released: 1988 C Illusion Total Time: 37:39 K Bring it Back Source - LP S East Coast, West Coast Girl A Little More Pale Horse Nothin' Much to Do It's not surprising that Twin/Tone Records has found a band to carry the torch that The Replacements and Soul Asylum have handed down. The Twin/Tone Record Group has been producing some of the best new music in America for several years now. The Magnolias power and strength is felt immediately on _For Rent_, their second Twin/Tone album, and continues throughout the 12 songs. They do rest briefly on the slower 'Gangs in My Town' and 'Bring it Back'. Like their former labelmates (actually, Soul Asylum is part of Twin/Tone-Coyote's A&M deal) the Magnolias attack is straight ahead, no frills rock. Their songwriting is right in tune with the music, with John Freeman's lyrics meshing perfectly with the twin guitar attack. Particularly notable are 'Gangs in My Town' and 'East Coast West Coast Girl'. If you've followed any of the Minneapolis bands that have sprung up recently, you've heard a lot of mention about the Minneapolis music scene. Well, the Magnolias are yet another excellent band to emerge. I wouldn't be surprised to see the next Magnolias album come out as part of the Twin/Tone-Coyote deal with A&M. If you're looking for something with a little edge to it, check out both Magnolias albums. The first, _Concrete Pillbox_, was produced by ex-Husker Du member Grant Hart and is a wee bit grungier than _For Rent_, if that's possible. ======================================================================== I'm Not Here (1967) So Good It Hurts Ghosts of American Astronauts The Mekons Road to Florida Producers: The Mekons & Brian C. T Johnny Miner Pugsley R Dora Engineer: Brian C. Pugsley A Poxy Lips Twin/Tone TTR 88114 C Fletcher Christian Released: 1988 K Fantastic Voyage Total Time: 40:43 S Robin Hood Source - LP Heart of Stone Maverick Vengeance About once a year an album comes along that just completely takes you by surprise and blows you away. Then, it blasts away a couple of more times just for good measure. _So Good It Hurts_ is such an album. The Mekons have had several albums released in Great Britain. _So Good It Hurts_ is their second release on Twin/Tone. It is preceded on Twin/Tone by 1987's _Honky Tonkin'_, an LP that's a combination of punk, country and folk that's brilliant at times, heralding what is yet to come. 'Sleepless Nights' and 'Prince of Darkness' are, perhaps, most poignant examples. Building on the basis of _Honky Tonkin'_, and adding in some reggae, afro-pop and calypso influences, the Mekons have given us _So Good It Hurts_. _So Good It Hurts_ is easily the Mekons best recent album (I haven't heard any of their pre-1985 material) and is one of the best albums I have heard in some time. Not since last year's _Cuba_ by the Silos have I been so impressed by an album. My favorite songs on the album are 'Ghosts of American Astronauts', 'Dora' and 'Heart of Stone', all of which feature a female lead vocal. Also notable are the gritty 'Road to Florida' (which sounds a little like a rum-soaked 'Beds Are Burning', the Midnight Oil tune), 'Johnny Miner' - which begs to be performed in a crowded beer hall, and '(Sometimes I Feel Like) Fletcher Christian'. In all, there's not a bad cut on the album. The line-up of Mekons has changed quite a bit over the years. They started out as a living example of the punk ethic - amateurism a virtue, musical skill irrelevant, anyone could participate. They have managed to keep a sense of this ethic in their music, though they have become at least "somewhat skilled" musically. No complete list exists of everyone who has ever been a Mekon. A rough list of Mekons today include: John Langford (guitar, keyboards, vocals), Tom Greenhalgh (guitar, vocals), Kevin Lycett (bass, guitar, vocals), Dick Taylor (guitar), Steve Goulding (drums), Sally Timms, Robert Worby, Rico Bell (accordian, vocals), Susie Honeyman (fiddle) and John Gill (melodeon, bass). _So Good It Hurts_ is an album that will live near the turntable. The only time I'll file it away is when I pick up a copy of the Compact Disc, though I have a feeling that the LP format might be the better way to listen to songs like 'Robin Hood' and 'Johnny Miner'. ======================================================================== What Is There To Smile About Close Lobsters Producer: John A. Close Lobsters sound is reminiscent of the Housemartins and some of the Smiths work. Close Lobsters don't do anything particularly fancy. What they do is kept simple and honest, which is why Close Lobsters are so much better than your average pop band. Close Lobsters are a five-piece band from Paisley, Scotland who first came to the attention of the British public when they were a part of the New Musical Express compilation cassette C86. They've since released a couple of singles and the 1987 album _Foxheads Stalk This Land_. I'm a little surprised that an EP has followed that first LP release, but in a way it's a good idea, as it leaves the listener wanting more. Ok, so when are we going to get more!? ======================================================================== Pick Hits Live John Scofield Producer: John A. Rivers T Picks and Pans Engineer: Not Credited R Pick Hits Gramavision 18 8805-1 A Heaven Hill Released: 1988 C Protocol Total Time: 45:07 K Blue Matter Source - LP S Thanks Again "It's hard to put a label on my music, like jazz or fusion," says Scofield. "It's instrumental music that has one foot in the jazz tradition and the other in the popular traditions, especially rhythm 'n' blues. Most musicians my age are influenced by both things. I came up with the Beatles and the Stones and that led, for me, to jazz. My first love was the blues -- Muddy Waters, B.B. King -- so my music and the music on my albums is a reflection of all of this. Jazz musicians don't live in a vacuum any more, where they only hear jazz." Scofield is, ostensibly, a jazz musician, if one must label him and his music. As in any dynamic environment a jazz artist is influenced by what has gone before and what is currently happening. What has gone before, for John Scofield, is work with such jazz luminaries as George Duke, Billy Cobham, Gary Burton, Lee Konitz, Dave Liebman and legends Charles Mingus and Miles Davis. Scofield's most visible stint as a sideman was with Miles' group, which covered three albums (_Star People_, _Decoy_ and _You're Under Arrest_) and three years beginning in 1982. Since leaving Miles' group he has led his own group and also has released several albums on Gramavision/GAIA. As Scofield says, it is hard to pigeon-hole his music. He lives up to this claim on _Pick Hits_, delivering some blistering blues licks, some raucous rock fusion solos and some subtle, intimate jazz improvisations. His band of Dennis Chambers (drums), Gary Grainger (bass) and Robert Aries (keyboards) backs him neatly, though Scofield is clearly the featured performer. _Pick Hits_ was recorded live on October 7th, 1987 in Tokyo, Japan. Scofield says in the liner notes that the audience and the band came together on that night to create a special evening. Any live recording cannot completely capture a given concert. What luck that this one comes so close so that it may be shared by those of us who were not fortunate enough to have been in Tokyo, Japan on 10/7/87. ======================================================================== Heresay Paul McCandless Producers: Cookie Marenco and Sojourner Paul McCandless T Beside a Brook Engineer: Randy Sellgren and R The Marvelous Harlequin Duck Cookie Marenco A Cloudy This Morning Windham Hill WH-1075 C Kinesphere Released: 1988 K Tail Wind Total Time: 42:40 S Hologram Source - LP Eyebright Windham Hill has recently been releasing solo albums by artists who have been established in the music world (Ben Sidran, Ian Matthews) as well as exposing listeners to "new" artists (Tuck & Patti). _Heresay_ features Paul McCandless on a variety of wind instruments and keyboard synthesisers. Paul McCandless has been a member of Oregon since 1970, has played with the Paul Winter Consort, recording five albums, and has appeared on albums by Jaco Pastorius, Eberhard Weber, Wynton and Branford Marsalis, Carla Bley, Pat Metheny, Mark Isham, Elvin Jones and Billy Cobham. _Heresay_ combines a lot of styles and influences to give us a "contemporary chamber" idiom. _Heresay_ doesn't really fit in well with the "popular" image of the Windham Hill label, but neither would it fit nicely into their Windham Hill Jazz subsidiary. _Heresay_ is neither new age nor jazz, nor is it both. It is also neither acoustic nor electronic. But it is all of these. The fusion or synthesis is quite nice, too, and often compelling. ======================================================================== Jukebox A Time A Place Jamaaladeen Tacuma Meta-Morphosis Producers: Jamaaladeen Tacuma and T Rhythm of Your Mind Jonathan F.P. A word that comes from a West African dance term juk. The jukebox is a symbol of what's popular in American music. This _Jukebox_ will challenge you to get up on your feet and move. Unlike the fare you will hear on most jukeboxes, though, _Jukebox_ does not lead you blindly. Rather, it forces you to follow and pay attention to what is happening. Having worked in Ornette Coleman's Prime Time Band, Tacuma knows how to get your attention with his music. He also manages to hold it once you get a small taste. As soon as you think you've got Tacuma pinned down, anticipating the next phrase, he'll throw you a curve to keep your attention. Though Ornette Coleman's ideas are no longer revolutionary, they are still in a class by themselves and some of these musical ideas have carried over into _Jukebox_. _Jukebox_ features Tacuma on bass and synthesiser, Byard Lancaster on saxophone, Alan Sukennik on keyboards, Ronnie Drayton on electric guitar and Dennis Alston on drums. Byard Lancaster's sax work helped to make this a very enjoyable record. All of the compositions were written by Tacuma except 'Naima', a John Coltrane tune. ======================================================================== Breaking All The Rules Trouble Again Diane Davidson What'm I Gonna Do Producer: Diane Davidson T Song of Bernadette Engineer: John Salem R Built For Comfort Second Wave LP 22011 A Song For My Father Released: 1988 C So Lucky Total Time: 49:20 K Keep My Love Light Burnin' Source - LP S Tonight I'll Dream That You Care Killer Without a Heart Everything to Me Heaven Bound In an earlier review I mentioned that it is rare that an album comes along and just knocks you for a loop. Well, this is another album that was a very nice recent surprise, especially since I am a big fan of female vocalists. Diane Davidson has got the pipes to fill a large area with a lot of sound. Her folk and blues background has aided in her ability to perform a variety of styles, each compelled by her powerful voice. Diane's sound is very full and rich, though she can become spare and wistful ('Song of Bernadette') when she wishes. Diane traverses several styles on _Breaking All the Rule_ with ear- pleasing results. Her interpretation of Leonard Cohen and Jennifer Warnes' 'Song of Bernadette' and Willie Dixon's raunchy blues 'Built for Comfort' are nothing, if not stunning. Diane shines on her own compositions, as well, both with her voice and songwriting ('Song for Father' & the rocking gospel tune 'Heaven Bound'). Diane is currently touring throughout the country in support of _Breaking All the Rules_. Her show should be well worth catching. Given a large hall or arena, Diane's voice can escape the confines of a home stereo system and completely engulf a listener. Check it out. You'll probably find that Diane's voice is "built for comfort". ======================================================================== The Carmen McRae-Betty Carter Duets Producer: Tom Bradshaw, Betty What's New? Well, for starters, the audience become witness to an historical event. Secondly, the singers put on an electrifying show, interacting with each other and the audience. The audience is a very crucial factor in this recording. They are an instrument and a catalyst, inspiring performances that would not be the same coming from a studio atmosphere. Carmen McRae and Betty Carter have been prominent in the jazz world for more than 30 years. Both thrived in the bebop era of the 1950s, faded from the American spotlight in the 1960s and have enjoyed increasing popularity in the 1970s and 1980s. Once again, here is a live album that captures the essence of the concert as well as it can be captured on vinyl for the many of us who could not attend these shows. The story of how these shows came about is an interesting one. Carter had came along one night and had sat in with Carmen McRae at the Blue Note in New York City. Carter recalls her counterpart's casual invitation. "She said very calmly onstage, why don't we do an album together? So a couple of months later I called her up and asked if she was still interested." It's as simple as that. ======================================================================== Mood Swings Carla White If Dreams Come True Producer: Bob Porter and T The Night We Called it a Day Carla White R Never Mind the Rain Engineers: Malcolm Addey A Love Me Tomorrow Milestone M-9159 C You're My Thrill Released: 1988 K The Gentleman is a Dope Total Time: 41:42 S For Heaven's Sake Source - LP Yardbird Suite (What Price Love) Love Came on Stealthy Fingers _Mood Swings_ is an album that lives up to its name. Carla White easily traverses the various styles and moods here. Each mood shift is musically pleasing and showcases Carla's interpretive talents; talents carried over from her time spent as a dancer. Carla's previous albums featured more scatting than _Mood Swings_. She does scat on a couple of tunes here, cutting loose on 'If Dreams Come True' and 'Yardbird Suite (What Price Love)' (with rarely heard lyrics by Charlie Parker). Each of these songs is an incredible listening experience. Carla's backing band, Peter Madsen (piano), Phil Bowler (bass) and Tim Horner (drums), turns in a fine performance, stretching out on a few solos, but mostly they support well, thrusting Carla into the spotlight. Not only is the band excellent in their role, but the material chosen, though not necessarily new, is fresh and invigorating, making for a unique listening experience. ======================================================================== CD Single News by Bill Bumgarner wb1j+@andrew.cmu.edu This is a first try at writing anything informative about the world of CD singles. I'm no writer, but I do have information that I feel is worth sharing. If you have information or corrections, send it to the above e-mail address and I will incorporate it into the next issue/release/newsletter/set-of-notes. Onward... The domestic (US) cd single market is starting to pick up. Looking in the main line, $15/disc, chain stores, The little bins by the cash register are becoming quite over-stuffed with the 3 inch discs in shoddy card board wrapping. Even though the packaging has yet to improve, the contents of the singles are improving considerably. The initial releases contained standard release material ripped off three or four albums by the artist. Now, the CD-3's are starting to contain remix tracks, and previously unreleased tracks. I noticed a large amount of Michael Jackson and Bruce Springsteen tracks. There was also a Black Flag CD-3, which is worth mentioning simply because there are no other bands of that genre in the cash-register CD-3 bins.... odd to find Black Flag mixed in with the likes of Sting, Bruce Springsteen, Suzanne Vega, Michael Jackson, Simple Minds, and other big name groups. As is typical in the music market, the really good CD singles are imported from Europe. Not only are the contents of the discs more interesting, longer and better mixed than the domestic discs, but they are packaged properly. Imported cd singles are almost always released in the 5-inch format, usually with the extra 2 inches being a mirror finish (very impressive to look at). The casing is a slim-line case that is half as thick as a regular jewel box, has an easy to remove/insert liner sheet, and leaves the disc label facing outwards. They are extremely easy to open, and grip the disc much better than the little plastic fingers in a regular jewel box. There are a huge assortment of import CD singles available, though it is difficult to get any one title because the sources are unreliable. Most of the singles are coming out of the UK, though I have discs produced in France, Germany (of course), Austria, Canada, and US (made here, exported to the UK, imported back at a high price). Noteworthy Singles ---------- ------- This section is devoted to singles that are unique in some form or another. I will divide it up by artist. Eurythmics: ---------- There are 3 single releases off of the last Eurythmics album, _Savage_. Two of the singles are limited, numbered releases, and are packaged in a metal can. The can is about 1/2" thick and have a diameter a tad bit larger than a CD. The name of the single is stamped into the lid, and the disc itself is silk-screened with a picture relating to the title of the single. All three discs also include live material. One of the singles contains an absolutely brilliant live recording of "Here Comes The Rain Again" followed by a live acoustic version of "You Have Placed A Chill in My Heart". The cans come in two different styles; black for one release, and silver for the other. The third disc comes in a slimline case. The silver can is still fairly easy to get, while the black can is nearly impossible (I am interested in picking up another black can. If you know where I can get one, send me E-Mail). There is another can available (copper with a relief design around the edge) by a different artist, but I don't remember the name. Depeche Mode: ------------ Five limited release singles from France. These discs contain a remix of the title track plus four or five live cuts. 5000 of each pressed. They come in cloth pouches in cardboard covers (I immediately move them to a jewel box). Depeche Mode have never released a live album. This is the only way to get live material (other than bootleg). These discs are also available on normal release (not numbered, made in Germany, regular jewel box). I have three of the five limited release - "Blasphemous Rumours", "Love In Itself", and "Get The Balance Right". If you know where I can get the other two, please send E-Mail. The Cure: -------- Hot, Hot, Hot!!! is on CD single - excellent for those with _Kiss Me x3_ because the full length CD doesn't contain "Hey You!!!!", and the CD single contains the remix of it. There is a Cure bootleg CD available; it is called _Arabian Dreams_, and contains both studio and live material. Good sound quality and about 40+ minutes of music. Usually seen for around $25. Simple Minds: ------------ Apparently, Australia is following the US lead of releasing two or three track 3" CD singles in shoddy packaging, but with different material. I obtained the CD of "Don't You Forget About Me" Australian release. "Don't You Forget About Me" is the standard album/soundtrack release, BUT the second track is a 9:20 instrumental titled "A Brass Band in African Chimes"; excellent, unlike anything else Simple Minds have done. CD Singles go for about $7.20 in Australia. Marillion: --------- Three CD singles are available from _Clutching At Straws_. All contain remixed and unreleased material. The "Sugar Mice" CD Singles is extremely rare and can't be found for less than $45. "Incommunicado" and "Warm Wet Circles" are fairly common, the former being easier to obtain. Anyone know of the existence of CD Singles from _Misplaced Childhood_? U2: -- Three CD single set from England that goes for about $30. These discs contain the three singles from _The Joshua Tree_ in their album form. The remarkable part of the singles are the 7 extra tracks. They are the tracks that were recorded during the Joshua Tree recording sessions, but were never released. Most of the extra material is better than the material that was actually on _The Joshua Tree_. A lot of it has the power of older U2 (_War_, _October_). The other U2 CD single is "Desire". Contains two mixes (Album and 'Hollywood') of "Desire"; both being nothing spectacular. The 'b-side' track is "Hallelujah, Here She Comes", an excellent track that out shines the studio material on _Rattle and Hum_. A few notes on CD single sources: There are basically three different CD Single sources; US, UK, and Japan. US - Mentioned previously. Just starting to get interesting, but all material is poorly packaged. UK - There is a huge amount of material available (Depeche Mode has over 15 different CD Singles available alone). Japan - The Great Untapped Source. The Japanese CD singles are different than UK and US because the musical interests are so vastly different. Propaganda, Art of Noise, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Pink Floyd, and Bruce Springsteen are commonly available CD singles. Japanese singles (and full length discs) are usually completely remixed. The quality of the recording blows away anything released in the West. The Japanese seem obsessed with high-quality, high-content releases for low prices. I am attempting to get some Japanese singles and will report on quality, pricing, content, and packaging when I have them in hand.... Every now and then, one will pop up in some of the better record stores, but not the more remarkable ones. Casing - If you buy a CD single, and it's in a cardboard pouch, I would suggest getting a jewel box (usually $1/each) and putting it in that. I have created MacDraw II templates for printing inserts and use that to case and store my singles. The original carrier then goes in storage in a safe place. ======================================================================== Over the last few months I've been writing letters to and getting responses from several people and groups involved in the "cassette underground". The "underground" is comprised of people and groups who record and distribute their music largely on cassette and largely on their own. A lot of the music is very eclectic in nature and encompasses most any style imaginable. If you're looking for an alternative to demographically controlled music programming, the "cassette underground" is a great place to start. I've received a number of cassettes since sending out my initial queries. Here are some short reviews and the information needed to contact those involved with these releases. Do-It-Yourself Punkture - Bob Z's Bad Newz Cassettezine is a compilation of snippets from Amerikkkan kulture and several bands that are of the thrash/noize variety. Bands represented here are A.P.P.L.E., Screeching Weasel, Nausea, Mecca Normal, Professor Louie, New Republic and Blowfish. All in all, this is an excellent compilation that is not for the faint of heart. The recording quality is reasonably good, though a bit muddy at times. There are some classic lines in some of these songs, such as "Society makes me want to puke," from Screeching Weasel's 'Society'. My favorite tune, and one I've played on my radio show several times, on this cassette is 'Wake Up' by Professor Louie. This is a tune that is very spare, a cool sax line in the background forming a basis for the talk-singing message of 'Wake Up'. I can't say that I completely agree with political bent of this compilation, but there's some damned interesting music just the same. For more information write to: Bob Z, c/o Sarris Bookmarketing, 125 E. 23rd Street #300, New York, New York 10010. Mr. Happy Man - The Wallmen. This cassette is the most recent from the Syracuse, NY group the Wallmen. This 60 minute cassette is filled with 22 songs that can best be described as garage-punk-psychedelia with most of the emphasis on psychedelia. 'Milo 9', 'Rayon Love Suit' and 'Magic Rugburn' are all excellent tunes that in a less sane world (Hmm... the world isn't all that sane right now!) would be riding high on the charts. At times on Mr. Happy Man I'm reminded of some of King Crimson's forays into the psychedelic waters. One of the nice things about the Wallmen's 60 minute cassettes is that they are available for $3.00 apiece. That's certainly a much better bargain than a $9.00 35 minute Tiffany album! For more information, write to: Wallmen, 7711 Lisa Lane, N. Syracuse, New York, 13212. I have received several other tapes that I haven't had a chance to listen to enough to do them justice with a review. I will include more reviews of this nature in future issues. Following is a list of addresses of people or groups who produce or provide underground cassette releases. I have also included addresses for a few publications that might be of interest as well. The two titles released are _Hoodoo Man Blues_ (DS-612) by Junior Wells' Chicago Blues Band, featuring Buddy Guy and the Magic Magic Sam Blues Band's _West Side Soul_ (DS-615). These two releases have been quite popular and are essential to any blues enthusiast. Another recent release by Delmark is Roosevelt Sykes' _Raining In My Heart_ (DS-642). This LP is a collection of the late Sykes' work of the early 1950's which contains several previously unissued tracks. For fans of blues and blues piano, this is an excellent find. Delmark has a free catalog of jazz and blues which is available by writing to Delmark Records, 4243 N. Lincoln Avenue, Chicago, Illinois 60618. If your local record store does not stock Delmark product, write to the above address and they will provide you with the name of the closest store that does stock Delmark product or they will tell you how you can order from their Chicago store by mail. And, as always, if you write to Delmark (or any other label mentioned in Network Audio Bits), please mention Network Audio Bits in your letter. New releases by Bruce Cockburn, The Washington Squares and Peter, Paul and Mary should be out very soon on Gold Castle Records. Cockburn has not released an album of new material since 1985's _World of Wonders_, though his compilation _Waiting For A Miracle_ (on Gold Castle) did contain two new studio tracks. Tiny Lights have recently been touring in the southwest in support of their GAIA album _Hazel's Wreath_ and are scheduled to go into the studio to cut a new album early next spring. Fantasy, Inc. has announced that Brian and Edward Holland have entered into a distribution deal with the Fantasy. The Hollands' HDH and Music Merchant labels will be distributed worldwide by Fantasy. The first release will be the single "(I've Got) Female Trouble" by The Boyz from Detroit. ======================================================================== CONCERT WATCH ***NOTE*** All information concerning concert dates is subject to change without notice.
