Occasional bursts of Sonic Youth-like guitar noise accentuate the little girlish vocals of Julie Shields. There are points where Shallow could be described as ambient-indie-rock-noise with all the complexity that implies. There are other points where they do not stray far from the brooding, female-led, indie-pop sound that seems to be in abundance of late. Very solid album.
