The second band to emerge on CD after the breakup of Uncle Tupelo is Jay Farrar's Son Volt. UT co-founder Jeff Tweedy's band Wilco released an album earlier this year. Son Volt leans mostly toward the acoustic, quiet side of the alternative-country-rock that UT did so well on the album March 16-20, 1992. There are a couple of tunes that rock out enough to recall UT's almost-punk brand of noise, but most of this CD is filled with the sort of material that will make you want to curl up in a corner with a bottle of JD and get real mellow.
